[former] Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, New Street, Wellington This large and imposing chapel (built of brick & Grinshill stone) was opened on Good Friday 23rd March 1883 to the design of Herbert Isitt of Bradford and built by Messrs Paterson & Sons of Wellington, for which tenders were invited on 25th April 1882. The foundation stones had been laid on Tuesday 18th July 1882. Under the first stone was laid a bottle containing a circuit plan, various papers, local newspapers and coins, which was placed in situ by Mr Peplow of Shifnal, aged 88, who had placed a bottle under the foundation stone of the previous Wesleyan chapel in Wellington 59 years previously. The chapel had a seating capacity for 900 worshippers and was built at a cost of £4000 for the site, the building and the conversion of the old chapel into a school. It replaced the former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel farther east on New Street, q.v. The chapel closed & was due to be demolished on 1 September 2003.
